What does a Functional Nutrition Practitioner do differently?

I personally love this question. I like to focus on optimizing the health and function of the digestive system through nutrition and lifestyle changes/interventions.

Some key topics that I may address with a client are:

  1. Gut microbiome: I will help educate you on the role of beneficial bacteria, diversity of the microbiome and how it impacts your overall health.

  2. Digestive Disorders: I will provide guidance and support if you suffer from digestive disorders like IBS, Celiac disease, and more. We can help identify trigger foods, develop elimination diets and suggest dietary modifications to manage symptoms.

  3. Food Intolerances and Sensitivities: This may involve an elimination diet or testing, & reintroduction protocols to be able to identify your trigger foods.

  4. Nutrient Absorption: I will help educate you on factors that affect nutrient absorption in the gut such as gut permeability, enzyme deficiencies and inflammation. We can work to enhance your nutrient absorption and support overall health.

  5. Gut Brain connection: The gut-brain axis....we will discuss how gut health influences mental health, stress response and cognitive function and recommend dietary interventions to support a healthy gut-brain connection.

  6. Prebiotics and Probiotics: We will discuss probiotic foods or supplements to support a healthy gut microbiome. We will review fermented foods, fiber rich foods and specific strains of probiotics into the diet.

  7. Gut Friendly diet: I will recommend a gut friendly diet that focusses on whole, unprocessed foods, high in fiber and rich in nutrients. This may involve suggesting specific foods that promote gut health such as fruits, veggies, healthy fats, all while minimizing processed foods, added sugars and artificial additives.

  8. Lifestyle Factors: We will address lifestyle factors that impact gut health such as stress management, sleep quality, physical activity and environmental influences.
